Getting Started With An Online Business or Improving Yours
I like to think of your digital marketing strategy as a wheel. Your website is the hub and the spokes are is your different online accounts. One of the biggest mistakes I made in my first few years of digital marketing was not being organized. I was creating accounts all over the web, social media, blogs, networking sites, but I had no idea how they all fit together and often lost track of where I was going because I was not organized. I would flit around so capriciously that I often forgot what accounts I even had.
Of course I remedied that problem several years ago and have all of my ducks in a row, One of first lessons I am going to teach you then is going to be the importance of getting organized as you build. Don’t do like I did and act like you are throwing spaghetti on the wall and seeing what sticks. To help you get your online business started and organized, or to help you change the way you organize and handle the small business you already have, I am going to offer tips and advice that will get you going in the right direction. Hopefully this will keep you from making the same mistakes I did, which will save you time, headaches, and ultimately money.

You may not even yet know what kind of online business you want to create. Well, you are in luck, because this article from one of my mentors, Pat Flynn at Smart Passive Income titled How to Build a Niche Website, will not only give you great ideas for the kind of business to start, it will show both the entrepreneur who already has a niche and the beginner who is searching for their niche how to get started successfully. The article is filled with actual case studies of niches Pat started and his subsequent success.
There are several different options for starting a successful business online. You may have a product or service you want to sell by building a website, or online store. Or you may want a business that is already created for you so that you can stop working for someone else and be your own boss. Then thirdly, you may be the business person who is all set up and just looking for a way to promote successfully. Below we will address each of those three scenarios individually.
You want to work for yourself but don’t have a product or service, and are just getting started looking for your perfect small business where the work is done for you. The ideas below are a few of my favorites:
Those are just a few of the businesses I have found that are legitimate and that you can start immediately without any product or service, or website building involved.
If you have a product you want to sell, or would like to sell other people’s products, I highly recommend you set up an online store using Volusion. This is the best platform I have found to build an online store. You just sign up and follow the instructions, which are super easy. There is a 14-day free trial available and the least expensive plan is only $15 a month. I build Volusion stores for clients if you need someone to build it for you.
If you have a service, or a product you would rather have your own website for, then the best option is to buy a domain name and web hosting from Blue Host. They are rated the best and are also the most reliable and affordable. I build WP websites using BlueHost, so if you want someone else to handle that, let me know.
You Gotta Have a Blog
I have been a professional blogger for business clients for 12 years and I have to tell you this. A business without a blog is way behind its competitors. The marketplace is extremely competitive, and blogging is the right way to make you stand out.
